Richard M. Keane, a beloved resident of Wethersfield, CT, a cherished
husband, a devoted father, grandfather, and father-in-law, a lay
minister at Sacred Heart Church, an avid gardener, and a wonderful
friend to all who knew him, was a victim of the September 11th, 2001
attack on the World Trade Center in New York City.

The Richard M. Keane Foundation was established to honor the
memory of "Dick" Keane and to raise funds to provide a community
center for the people of Connecticut. The Foundation has ambitious
goals and
we need your help to reach them.
In October, 2006, Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell visited the future site of the "9/ll Memorial Sports Center" within the Wethersfield Community Center and offered her generous assistance...
On May 23, 2008, the Keane Foundation was honored when it was allowed to actually acquire two pieces of twisted steel from the tragic, collapsed World Trade Center, where three Wethersfield residents lost their lives. (Please refer to our Spring 2008 Newsletter Pg.5 for an account of the initial visit to Hanger 17 at JFK Airport in New York.)
On May 24, these two pieces were presented to the awestruck Wethersfield public and guests during the Memorial Day Parade in Old Wethersfield. Within the next few weeks these two pieces will be permanently installed in the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center, now nearing completion. And, from the Town Manager's report of 6/6/2008:
"The 9/11 Memorial Sport Center construction is moving along nicely. New sidewalks have been installed on the exterior of the building and the new brick sidewalk is being installed this week. The fencing was installed around the generator and the outside areas have been graded and prepared for mulch and plantings. The gas piping was completed on the roof for the new heat and air handling unit and all the ductwork is being insulated on the roof. The World Trade Center steel has arrived from New York and it is being prepared for installation at the site. One piece will be mounted inside the building on a wall and the second piece will be installed at the entrance to the sports center. Interior work has been happening with the rooms being painted, lights installed in the ceiling of the new foyers and the ceiling being prepared for painting. Upcoming work includes the installation of the basketball hoops, gym and fitness room floor, ceiling tiles in fitness room, tile work and plumbing fixtures in bathroom and shower and installation of the steel pieces."
